Steel Battalion: A community that doesn't suck?
March 10th 2004, 01:32 CET by dookieagain

Recently I started playing an online version of the Xbox mech simulator Steel Battalion.  A game most notable for its massive $200 40 button controller.  In the past few weeks I have put in many hours on this game, and noticed something.  The community was friendly, helpful, and more concerned with playing the game for fun, than for ranking or prestige.  Not to mention that on every server I have played on teamwork ruled the day.  To use the internet idiom WTF?!

Now I suppose there are some reasons for this, one that comes to mind is the $250+ entrance fee, seeing as how a player needs the game and controller, ($200) an Xbox Live Subscription ($70), and the online expansion disc ($50).  But expense doesnít seem to stop hundreds of morons and griefers from having $2000 gaming rigs.  Nor does a monthly subscription fee and a focus on teamwork seem to discourage the many idiots and fun breaking players on Planetside and every other MMOG.

Nor is it because the game lacks a comprehensive ranking system or sufficient encouragement to be at the top.  Rather it has a system that highly rewards winning players with special nicknames, descriptors and special unique items and mechs.  It seems the sort of game where people would be scrambling to abuse the ranking systems and breaking teams for bonus kills.  After all, what power gamer doesnít live for the opportunity to collect rare loot?

I donít know why the community in Steel Battalion: Line of Contact is the way it is, but an indication of the quality is the fact that I have the lowest rank, a clearly awful record, and am often unaware of the best tactics and yet players who have high rank and clearly superior Kills to Death ratios are happy to join my team and treat me as an equal.  Not to mention the fact that in the whole time I have played I have yet to hear the term noob once, which is a godsend.

Admittedly this is a game with Draconian systems of play and poor technical implementation, but the community alone has me working through the many otherwise experience harming technical SNAFUS like losing mechs to network hiccups or the death (As in a character, stats, items, and all is permanently deleted) of experienced pilots due to lag.  Still if anyone has played this game, or any other online game with a remarkably good community, this should be the place to post.

Haven't we already talked about this?

On a more interesting note, it looks like Caryn wasn't pulling for us hard enough on the coop front for Doom3.  According this article on gamepro, the console version will have coop, but they make it sound like an addition, not something they are developing for both with this statement, "Our biggest addition for the Xbox is the ability to play the single player game with a friend in co-op mode."

I was so hoping...

Oh yeah, nothing foul was meant in Caryn's direction...only lamenting the loss (or never having) of the coop PC.

What a bunch of slackers; even the Sega Genesis could do four player Gauntlet.

Does it really take two people to find the red key?

I agree that coop is particularly easy, but as with Halo, I feel most games are better with coop.  Hopefully the Xbox version is decent, but I don't really feel the urge to buy either at this point...then again, I'm a jaded FPS gamer...

Sooo...what's the verdict for the Metal Gear Solid GC remake?

"Whether he likes it or not, a man's character is stripped bare at the poker table; if the other players read him better than he does, he has only himself to blame. Unless he is both able and prepared to see himself as others do, flaws and all, he will be a loser in cards, as in life."

No, but it deletes your savegame if you don't remember your Master's words.

Does it still follow Ryu Hayabusa, or does it just pit you in a game as some unnamed ninja?

I always read Ninja Gaiden as Ninja Garden, so unless the game features stealthy pruning and raking pleasing swirls into paths then I suspect I'd be disappointed by it.

They all hate us anyhow, so let's drop the big one now.

Ninja Gaiden is fun if insanely tough. The plot in Ninja Gaiden is the best example of Japanese insanity in years though.  Everything from people who turn into tentacled demons (fiends) to huge breasted women with giant hammers.  Did I mention it randomly jumps around too?  I mean the original games had plots with demons and such, but at least that had a semblance of order.  Still I can't complain about the level in the new one where you single handedly take on a military force with a sword and a bow and arrow.  It is my dream of playing Rambo III, but he's a ninja.

Speaking of Co-op why the hell isn't Steel Batallion co-op?  I mean I love the battlefield 1942 style multiplayer, but going through massive invansion levels with a group of real players, that would be great.

That Gamepro article must be wrong, because I heard Doom 3 on the pc will have co-op.

Without the controller 80% of the fun would be gone.  I can do that without the controller in planetside.  Not to mention that the mech assault community is the worst community I have yet seen on xbox live.  Every whining 10 year old who could talk his parents into coughing up their Credit Card numbers plays mech assault, and every time I die I am called a noob.  Don't even get me started on the whole piss poor mech balance. *Cough PPC Cough*  Oh and I meant invasion, my typing is not at its peak today.

Speaking of Ninja Garden, a lot of ninja weapons are just repurposed farm tools. Old tools, mostly. I've yet to see a ninja version of a combine.

What's the consensus on the AvP movie trailer?

I have a few basic thoughts:

1. Quicktime is cockass
2. Yay! I will go see this even though it probably eats shit.
3. I hate it when movies use stock sound effects. I can't quite place it, but I know I've heard that gunshot elsewhere.

Not really much of a trailer more of a teaser.  Any clue who's directing?  I didn't see it on the teaser page and that's pretty important.  I mean regardless of the lack of overall quality in the latter Alien films, the directors have always been pretty talented.  I mean Cameron did Titanic, which despite my loathing it, was a huge success.  He also did Terminator II, which is good, and True Lies, which was entertaining.  Ridley Scott of Alien, is the man behind Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Bladerunner, and G.I. Jane (Which is an underated flick).  David Fincher did Alien 3, and he went on to do Fight Club and Seven.  And Alien 4 is directed by of all people, Jean-Pierre Jeunet who did Amelie (Which is a fantastic movie.) and Delicatessen which is also great.
As for what's seen in that trailer, looks like a present day motiff, which seems kinda weak considering how cool the future marine thing was in Aliens.  Plus it looks like the script where it takes place in the artic is the one that got nabbed, which is unfortunate because I hear it is crap.  I haven't read it myself, but I remember mumurings of how awful it is from almost a year ago.  It's on the net somewhere obviously, and if you have a link throw it this way so I can evalutate for myself.
