Hardly an invasion. They lobbed one or two shells from a sub off of the coast of Oregon.

It may have been the last time there was fighting on American soil, though.

not counting the civil war, you mean.

or are you saying that was basically how the WWF was done back in the old days?

I would like to comment, but i'm watching thousands of people protest against the war right at the moment, and that's a lot more entertaining.

National Guard is typically rolled out for in-state help.  Back up for state cops when things get heavy, help out in states of emergency, shoot protesting college students, that sort of thing.  Not sure where the funding comes from, probably a mix of state and Fed.  They've got things like A-10's and what not, but I think they're a kind of modern day militias, which were also different from regular army back in the day.

Spas. They were protesting outside Leinster House (Irish Parliament) today and the Minister for Tourism was accosted on the way to his office (which is 100m up the road). Then, a Senator was daubed with paint. By 'peace' protestors.

For the record, I wanted to add that I still believe that a nationwide draft could've alleviated the financial,  moral & patriotic burden this invasion is bringing on the US.

you're always demanding a draft. If you wanna fight, why don't you just sign up with the army?

The security company that provides this building with a guard at night has stepped up their efforts because of the war ... we now have a guard during the day as well.  A guard who waves and says "Hi!" as you walk by him and get on the elevator.

a good friend of mine who is currently doing internship in London, told me the London subway was surprisingly quiet this morning (in comparison to the usual), so I guess fear of terrorist attacks has really sunk in.
I must say my trip to London next week to visit my friend was certainly well timed...

I saw a report on a Dutch news show where a reporter was interviewing several people in the New York subway asking them whether they were expecting terrorist attacks, and what preparations they took.

One guy he interviewed grabbed his microphone the minute he pointed it at him, and started semi-rapping into it, like: "yeah man, ain't nuthin gonna go down, aigh. a-body be thinkin da shizzle be hittin but I'm dime."

In any case, we're only a couple years away (maybe less, depending upon information nobody knows about due to it being classified) from high-powered l
asers as a means to disable missiles (and satellites for that matter).

We're very close to that. One of my professors at UWyo and a friend of mine who did his PhD with him are both studying adaptive optics, and my professor works in part for the Starfire Optical Range in New Mexico. His entire work revolves around using adaptive optics in defensive laser systems that are designed to be able to fire at and destroy missles that are traveling through the air. The delivery system for the laser defense was actually a 747 equipped with a special rotating nose cone. Pretty cool stuff. The adaptive optics come in in that you have to have them in order to get your laser targetting and working properly through the differing layers of atmosphere as the missle is moving.

The Tube was quiet because there were signal failures this morning requiring people on the northern line to find alternate routes, the central line is also out, road traffic was slightly heavier that usual in North London, this is not uncommon, but the problem on the tube was worse than usual. But hey! It could be because lots of people woke up this morning and decided not to go into work this morning!

Having lived under terrorist threats for some 25 years now (IRA etc) you learn to get on with your life, you don't avoid stuff or wonder what might happen if you were blown up, otherwise they've succeded in their efforts, the chances of anything happening are extremely remote.

If you're scared about coming over then don't, I'm off to Manhatten at the beginning of May for a nice holiday, no-one is going to make me change my mind, I'm not going to let the remote possible threat of terrorism ruin it.

Does height added by boots count?

Well, it can count in a negative manner. If we're talking about work boots with a 3/4 inch sole, that's not an issue. But if it's some ridiculous height extension, it garners only scorn, much like those twitty kids with their 6-inch sneaker soles. Nevermind the japanese girls with the 12-inch soles from a few years back.

Oh, I'm not scared. I think some people are taking the threat way too seriously and/or are deliberately stirring up the panic.
Besides, even if I was afraid I wouldn't have postponed my trip because I don't want to miss this.
And I'm going to finally see Equilibrium in the UK! It doesn't open in Holland untill April 10th.

The threat is a media hype thing, people here (real londoners) are treating this as they have with every other threat on them... Deal with it if it happens.

Just so you're not surprised when you get to that club, you know heaven is a gay club right? not that it makes a difference, but you may want to be prepared for it. It is a good venue though.

Good, then I should be able to reasonably meet the minimum terrorist height requirement.

Of course, this is only a minor technicality, as even when "properly elected" into office, a politician has as much chance of not having gotten there via corrupt means as Dubya has of spelling racecar backwards.  --UncleJeet

worth watching the videos, its electromagnetic railgun technology, but instead of loading loads of slugs into one barrel, you have hundreds or thousands of barrels matrixed to fire at once.  You can then stack multiple shots into the barrels, the recoil is minimal and the firing rate is as fast as electromagnets can cycle.  Basically you have a projectable hammer from a few inches to up to a few miles across available that will shred anything it encounters.

The Laser on the 747 was featured on a recent ZZZ link, quite impressive, when Ive more time I try to dig up the link (which was an inline link to national science I think).

The Evolution video is a lot of fun.  I always wondered though it the song is really supposed to be called "Revolution" or if there was some set dressing mixup or something.  Having the "Evolution" sign in the video be in all star spangled red white and blue always made me wonder.
