The Anti-Canadian thing
June 22nd 2005, 22:48 CEST by wingwalker

I am a Canadian who has close working relationships with several Americans. I used to always feel welcomed and well regarded as a Canadian while traveling in the States. Over the last couple of years though, things have subtly changed and I sometimes find myself confronted with some pretty heavy Anti-Canadian sentiments from certain individuals.
Does any one care to elaborate as to when and why Canadians suddenly became nastier than the stuff that grows between your toes?
I know that it can't all be blamed on the Gordon Lightfoot music we've been exporting...Yeah, right!

I don't understand the attack-the-tourist mentality of those individual citizens like the one hanged encountered. I'm pretty sure they all don't support every decision their government makes. At least ask about a person's views before pouring hot tea on their genitals or face or what have you.

I'd have Way of the Gun-ned that bitch.*

It sucks that they're ruining it for the rest of you, but it's also disingenuous to imply that it's the foreigners who are unreasonably prejudiced.

I disagree.  I worked many tourist-heavy stores in SF and I could say that about most of the people, no matter where they are from.  Tourists, in general, suck and travel often brings out the worst in people.  Am I supposed to judge Euros from and the racist attitudes from French and German customers.  Should I hold getting chewed out by an Italian for his own mistake against all of Italy.

No matter how many Americans someone comes into contact with, there are over 300 millions individuals in this country, how many have they really met.  Is it truly enough to generalize an entire nation.

Are you fucking serious? How did this come about? That's face-punching time.

I had been travelling up from Sihanoukville with a Northern Irish travel buddy.  When we got to Phnom Penh and arrived at our guest house, the dining facility was filled.  A Japanese couple offered us room at their table and started talking to us.  We were asked where we were from, I answered and the Danish lady at the next table walked over and hit me with the tea.

As for punching her face, I was in a Southeast Asian country, sitting with some people from Japan.  It would be rude and embarassing to both the owners and my hosts at the table to attack the lady, so I didn't.  My buddy from Belfast yelled at her, she yelled back and I convinced Mick to sit down and ignore her.

Well, it would be reasonable to form a negative opinion of German tourists if 90% of them are rude, racist assholes.

I just went for a black, small-ish case with black drives and sat it next to the TV. Throw of a few homey decorations on top and I'm satisfied. Eventually, I'd like to get a case that could sit on top of my rack-style components, but that's a low priority. At least until my wife has a problem with the fugly thing being in the living room.

Speaking of the TiVo...  I have one sitting here that I'm not using.  I keep meaning to hawk it on ebay, but I never get around to it (more to the point, my wife never gets around it...I never had any intention of putting the effort forth for it).  If someone wants it, they are welcome to it.  Shipping cost would be all.

Canada is responsible for Rush, and that warms the heart of my mullet-crowned inner child. Rush is the best of nerd-prog-rock, with jazz-level skilled musicians and Objectivist lyrics. Rush is my 'should be guilty but isn't' pleasure, my childhood touchstone, my nostalgia. Rush is good.

Rush used Count Floyd in their concert videos, and Geddy sang a song for Doug & Bob McKenzie. Neil keeps the name 'Buddy Rich' on the minds of young drummers. Alex proved on their last album that he is indeed among the best of guitar players... fuck Clapton, Lifeson does a better Crossroads.

And, to all the haters, a pre-emptive fuck you all.

Also, I know five Canadians, and they're all cool.

Americans do get it worst that Canadians I was in Austria last month and was insulted several times "as an American". I would tell them that I was not an American but that just led to a discussion about how North America includes Canada thereby making me an American and responsible for any behaviour ever commited by anyone on this continent.

My follow up was to inquire as to how many Americans they had actualy ever dealt with and wonder of small wonders.....None.

Before my time there was up we had called on no less than three different bonafide US citizens to help resolve aircraft issues they were having. I pointed out to them that their view of Americans was severaly skewed and that they needed to remember the people who had just helped them and pointed out to them that my Grandpa died, as did many American Grandpas, just so their grandpa could fuck their Grandma and fill the world with forgetful, little children.

They were then invited to tag along during my next Aircraft annual inspection so that they could learn how to properly maintain a Whirlybird of death.....by none other than a bunch of gun totting, red necks in OKC. Americans know flying and I love every single one of you for fostering the environment that Wright grew up in.

Actually, I saw an interesting and ironic documentary about a medical emergency in Antarctica in winter.  The best pilots in the US Airforce couldn't fly down there, so they got a couple of Canadian bush pilots from northern Alberta.

Being the best US Airforce pilot does not mean that you are the best American pilot by a stretch. Besides the bush pilots prbably were more familiar with dealing with the elements. If the best US Airforce pilot comes from New Mexico, he is at a distinct disadvantage. Bush flying would put them right in their element but I would not send them to take out...Oh say..A Tornado ( German Fighter).
