The Anti-Canadian thing
June 22nd 2005, 22:48 CEST by wingwalker

I am a Canadian who has close working relationships with several Americans. I used to always feel welcomed and well regarded as a Canadian while traveling in the States. Over the last couple of years though, things have subtly changed and I sometimes find myself confronted with some pretty heavy Anti-Canadian sentiments from certain individuals.
Does any one care to elaborate as to when and why Canadians suddenly became nastier than the stuff that grows between your toes?
I know that it can't all be blamed on the Gordon Lightfoot music we've been exporting...Yeah, right!

Wingwalker may get more anti-Canadianism because the type of people who go to airshows are inbred hicks, the same type of people who think Canada should've taken part in the Iraq invasion even if it was illegal, because that's what neighbours do.

The current US administration isn't very Canadian friendly and various staunch republicans think that we should have supported the US in it's effort to go to war with Iraq. That could be part of the reason for the animosity.

Also regular bacon in Canada is the same as the regular US bacon so I really don't know where the name Canadian bacon comes from.

Canada isn't in step with the current right wing agenda.  Too much socialized healthcare and too much gay marriage and not enough killing arabs.

Personally, Canada is where half my TV comes from, given the whole Hollywood North thing.  So I like y'all fine.

Americans who travel or are interested in anything on an international level have to deal with anti-Americanism all the time.  America has been condescended to, on a variety of fronts, quite strongly for the past two or three decades.

I think alot of American prejudice towards other countries (be it anti-Canada, anti-French, anti-EU, whatever) is less a symptom of the current administration than a major reason that the administration is in power in the first place.

All in all, it should die down.  Most of it is just the words and views of dullards and, again, Americans get all the time.

I read recently that so many American tourists put the Canadian flag on their pack to try to escape the anti-Americanism that now Canadians have to explain that they're really from Canada (eh) in order to escape the anti-Americanism.

The pretending you're Canadian thing has been going on for decades.  I refuse to do it.  I just believe that if I am an American, with whatever benefits that entails, I have to take the lumps.

It can get pretty obnoxious though.  It never the natives, though, just other tourist from other countries.  Europeans are the worst.  They quite quick to assume you're the embodiement of their American stereotype.

The last time I travelled was right after George W. got reelected.  Not only did I get constant guff for American stupidity and imperialism and so on and so forth, but in Phnom Penh, a Danish woman threw a cup of scalding hot tea in my face as soon as she found out where I was from.

I'm pretty sure it's not just the stereotypes or the government.  I know a lot of people who work in retail, information kiosks and as Customs agents here.  There are plenty of American tourists who are just as bad as the stereotype.  It sucks that they're ruining it for the rest of you, but it's also disingenuous to imply that it's the foreigners who are unreasonably prejudiced.

I disagree.  I worked many tourist-heavy stores in SF and I could say that about most of the people, no matter where they are from.  Tourists, in general, suck and travel often brings out the worst in people.  Am I supposed to judge Euros from and the racist attitudes from French and German customers.  Should I hold getting chewed out by an Italian for his own mistake against all of Italy.

No matter how many Americans someone comes into contact with, there are over 300 millions individuals in this country, how many have they really met.  Is it truly enough to generalize an entire nation.

Are you fucking serious? How did this come about? That's face-punching time.

I had been travelling up from Sihanoukville with a Northern Irish travel buddy.  When we got to Phnom Penh and arrived at our guest house, the dining facility was filled.  A Japanese couple offered us room at their table and started talking to us.  We were asked where we were from, I answered and the Danish lady at the next table walked over and hit me with the tea.

As for punching her face, I was in a Southeast Asian country, sitting with some people from Japan.  It would be rude and embarassing to both the owners and my hosts at the table to attack the lady, so I didn't.  My buddy from Belfast yelled at her, she yelled back and I convinced Mick to sit down and ignore her.

I just went for a black, small-ish case with black drives and sat it next to the TV. Throw of a few homey decorations on top and I'm satisfied. Eventually, I'd like to get a case that could sit on top of my rack-style components, but that's a low priority. At least until my wife has a problem with the fugly thing being in the living room.
